First impression - I wasn't sure how well it would last, the lantern seemed lightweight. Once batteries were added, it is much heavier. And yes, the batteries are not provided. It would be nice if they were. The rubber coating seems substantial and I believe it adds to the durability of the lantern. The on off switch works well and rotates through the different settings. The light is bright and easily lit up a room. The image below was taken at night with all room lights turned off and no camera flash.
Concern - I really have only one concern and that is for the hook on the bottom of the lantern. It is made of plastic and doesn't appear that it would hold up well. I imagine it breaking off with average use. (see image below)
