Pixar has a new short, Lava; which can be seen along with the movie Inside Out. Director James Ford Murphy is going to tug on your heart strings with this love story. Lava was inspired by the isolated beauty of tropical islands and the explosive allure of ocean volcanoes, the film is a musical love story that takes place over millions of years between two volcanos.
We previewed the short recently at Disney World as a part of the Disney Social Media Moms Conference. There were a few tears in the audience. Lots of positive comments. Many people claiming "I lava you". I have even heard suggestions of Oscar worthy buzz.
Having studied animation as a part of my masters degree work, I am always interested in new techniques in animation. As a testament to the quality of the short; while watching, I was engrossed in the story line and I didn't pay close attention to the animation. For that reason alone, I want to watch it again to examine the artistry of the animation.
Lava's love story touches the hearts of all ages. The music will be hummed and sung over and over again. Add them together and you end up with an emotionally memorable short.
