Saint Patrick's Day, which takes place on March 17, commemorates the death of Ireland's patron saint. It was first celebrated as a religious feast around the ninth or 10th century. It was originally a minor Irish holiday. America is credited for turning it into the party that it is known for today, especially the drinking because in Ireland the pubs were closed.
I am not a huge fan of St. Patrick's Day. Obviously, because I am not Irish. I mean I did do my fair share of drinking green beer in college, usually on spring break. But since then I haven't really celebrated it. So my project for this month's craft challenge's theme of St Patrick's Day was almost a craft fail. I didn't have a great idea to move forward with. I purchased some green straws, ribbon, and flowers at the dollar store. My plan if you can call it that was to make a wreath that was green but not screaming of St. Patrick's Day or Irish. I accomplished that I think. It is actually more Mid Century Modern looking, which I like. I struggled with the production of the piece, hopefully, it doesn't show too much.
Materials:
- Ribbon
- Scissors
- Paper Straws
- Ultra Mod Podge
- Floral Stem
- Hot Glue Gun
- Scrap Card Stock
Directions:
Cut the straws so one end is longer than the other. Sorry, I didn't measure, I just eyeballed it.
Figure out the placement of the straws. I used the ribbon spool as a guide.
I sprayed the straws with Mod Podge but then I didn't want to wait the 4 hours necessary for the glue to dry.
I then used my hot glue gun to secure the card stock ring onto the straws for stability.
This is where I almost had a craft fail. It was flimsy. I was running out of time. Enter in the frustration!
I broke the round balls off the floral stem and randomly glued them to the wreath.
Here is where the project turned more Mid Century Modern.
So I went with it.
The look of the wreath really didn't lend it's self to a bow.
I chose to weave the ribbon in and out of the straws.
I hot glued every other straw down to the ribbon which gave it stability.
At this point, you could add four-leaf clovers for St. Patrick's Day.
I think I might glue a mirror into the center of the piece.
So there it is, my St. Patrick's Day/Mid Century Modern/Dollar Store Wreath.
