Update on My Knee Replacements

This post was sponsored by DePuy Synthes as part of an Ambassador Program for Influence Central and all opinions expressed in my post are my own.

I haven’t shared my knee replacement experience here although many friends know that I have gone through this. It is time to write about the whole process that has taken about a year.

In the past year, I have had both my knees replaced. Prior to surgery, I was in a lot of pain and really couldn’t walk or stand for any period of time without pain. The first time I went to have my knees checked, I was told beyond replacement there wasn’t much that could be done. In fact, he said, “I’ve seen worse but not much!” So having an injection of cortisone really didn’t do much or last long. I needed surgery. Check out your own needs at TimeToHitPlay.com.

I guess I have a high level of pain tolerance because both my knees were bone on bone. In fact, one knee was starting to shift to the side from being worn down.

My Ortho Indy doctor’s recommendation was right on, don’t have surgery until you can’t take the pain anymore, the decision was mine to make. So many people have gone through surgery with high expectations to end up not being happy with their results. Speak to your physician and get their opinion, then make your own.

I scheduled my first surgery for January. We had to prepare our house for my recovery and I wanted to get past the holidays. We transformed our lower level so I could live there for a few weeks and my husband could work from home. This made the second surgery in October that much easier.

The surgery itself wasn’t difficult, in fact, I was up walking the same day. I had to prove my ability to climb a step before I was released to home care.

Home care consisted of in-home therapy and daily exercises. I was then released to out-patient therapy. Yes there is pain in the recouping process but you know you are going to get better and the effort is worth it. Even though it is slow.

The downside to the entire experience was the side effects of the medication I was on. They can really mess with your stomach and digestion.

Each surgery takes about six months to recover completely from. While many huge improvements happen in the first few weeks, it does take time for nerve endings to rehab and swelling to completely go down.

Would I do it all again? In a heartbeat. The outcome of both surgeries was positive. Yes, I still have pain and I still need to exercise my knees, but I am walking better. I am looking forward to a European trip with my daughter this summer that wouldn’t have been possible without the surgeries.

My second knee surgery:

My right knee, about a week after surgery.

My right knee, 6 months after surgery.

The dark red areas in the scar are still healing. The large pink spot on my knee is from an ice bag I am using for a bit of swelling.

I hope to share more with you about my progress and trip to Europe and how two knee surgeries made it possible for me to travel.
