Decorative Floral Pomander :: Tutorial

Great for summer decorating, these floral pomanders are made with paper flowers so they will last and never wilt. We made two different versions, the top pomander has flowers all the same size while the lower versions uses the larger flowers around the middle of the ball and then we filled in the top and bottom with the smaller flowers. The materials shown below were more than enough to make both pomanders.

Materials:

  • Glue
  • Paper Flowers (Bright Multi-Flower Assortment   IN-65/65721)
  • Styrofoam ball 4"
  • ribbon (All Occasion Ribbon Pack  IN-65/66467)
  • floral pins 1 box per ball (Crystal Floral Pins  IN-41/1997)
  • scissors
  • skewer

Material in parentheses can be purchased through Oriental Trading. The direct links are provided.

 Begin by collecting your materials and open all the packaging. We laid out the flowers by their sizes.

Cut the ribbon so when doubled, it is long enough to extend past the ball. Tie a knot in the end. Using the skewer's dull end, placed into the loop of the ribbon, push it through the styrofoam ball.

Pull the ribbon through when you reach the other side. Remove the skewer (it is no longer needed). We used a little white glue under the knot.

Assemble the flowers as desired. We used one small flower with a larger flower. Push a floral pin through the middle of each paper flower, there is a small hole indicating the center. Once you have chosen the arrangement, push the floral pin into the styrofoam ball.

You could dip each pin into white glue before pushing the pin into the ball. Doing so would make the piece more permanent; however, it could cause adjusting the pins while making the pomander a bit more difficult or messy.

My daughters helped me make the pomanders. The process went quickly. They chose the paper flower pairing and put them on the floral pins, handing them over to me, I pushed them into the styrofoam ball. This is an easy craft to include children. I wouldn't allow them to do it alone due to the sharp points on the pins.
