Shouldn't Weekends Be A Family Affair?

Let’s be honest; we’re all busier than we would like to be. As well as facing full days, many of us have tasks to tackle once we get home, as well. What’s more, this is the case no matter our age. Adults have housework, extra work, and chores to take care of. Kids, on the other hand, have homework and revision to do.

It comes as no surprise, then, that many family homes become fractured. In fact, some families stop communicating properly at all, with everyone too busy tackling their to-do lists. When this happens, it’s all too easy to feel like you’re not together as a family unit anymore. And, that can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness, even when loved ones are in the next room.

Which is why it’s so important to spend your weekends as a unit. There is, of course, a temptation to kick back and recover. But, coming together can help overcome the distance which grows during the week. And, here are a few ways you can motivate everyone to get stuck in.

Arrange days out
If you try to get everyone together with no plan, you might well fail. After all, youngsters naturally gravitate towards their rooms if nothing's going on. And, you and your partner may slip into the habit of doing odd jobs, even on a Saturday. To make sure this doesn’t happen, plan specific days out. That way, you have a set reason to spend the time together, and you aren’t at home, so drifting apart isn’t an option. What’s more, there are so many options for days out that there should always be something to do. You could head out for walks sometimes to keep things cheap or go all out with a trip to the zoo.

Book the occasional weekend away

You may also want to book an occasional weekend away. The expense of this option means it isn’t practical every weekend. But, you could do this once a month, or once every three months. It doesn’t matter as long as you take this time out sometimes. You could book a family weekend at a retreat center like Albony Bay. Here, you’d have the chance to engage in group activities which are sure to build your family bond. Or, you could opt for a beach holiday, where you get to both relax and be together.

Make plans for the evening
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with taking it easy on the odd weekend. Everyone needs a time out sometimes. But, on those weekends, it may be worth making an event of your evenings. Keep this simple, but make sure everyone does at least one thing together. You could get a takeaway, watch a film, or even play a board game. These tasks don’t take long, but they ensure you spend at least an hour or two in each other's company. If you’ve hardly seen one another all week, that hour or two will make a huge difference.
